Umino began publishing the manga in Hakusensha's Young Animal magazine in July 2007. The publisher published the fifteenth compilation volume on December 26. Synopsis for 3-gatsu no Lion
Having achieved professional status in high school, Rei Kiriyama is one of the few elite players in the shogi world. Because of this, he faces both the shogi community and his adoptive family. Seeking independence from his tense way of life, he moves to an apartment in Tokyo. Being a 17-year-old boy living on his own, Rei tends to take very little care of himself, and his reclusive personality excludes him from his schoolmates and other shogi players.
However, shortly after her arrival in Tokyo, Rei meets Akari, Hinata, and Momo Kawamoto, a trio of sisters who live with their grandfather in a traditional wagashi store. Akari, the older sister, is determined to combat Rei's loneliness and lacking lifestyle with her mother attitude.
