Japanese media giant TOHO has announced the full acquisition of animation studio Science SARU , with the intention of competing more aggressively in the anime industry . TOHO, known for its rich history in the production of classics such as the original “Godzilla” film, “Ringu” and animes such as “Inuyasha” and “Spirited Away” in collaboration with Studio Ghibli, thus seeks to expand its production capacity and diversification in the anime market.
According to the TOHO statement, the
acquisition will become effective on June 19, and Science SARU will become a
consolidated subsidiary from the second quarter of the fiscal year ending
February 2025. Science SARU, founded in 2013 by
director Masaaki Yuasa and animator Eunyoung Choi, has been recognized for his
innovative approach and unique style in animation. Among his most notable works
are “ Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! “, the anime series
“ Scott Pilgrim “, the cult film “ The Night is Short,
Walk on Girl “, and the upcoming anime adaptation of “ Dandadan “.
Science SARU has garnered important awards and
recognition over the years. Yuasa’s film, “ Lu Over the Wall ,”
won the Grand Prix for Animation at the Japan Arts Festival Awards and the
“Crystal” award at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Another
notable work, “ INU-OH “, was nominated for the Golden Globes
in 2022.
The acquisition of an animation studio
by a large company like TOHO can have several significant effects, both
positive and negative. Financially, the acquisition
promises to strengthen TOHO's production capacity, allowing it to produce more
high-quality content more frequently. This can translate into greater
investments in animation technology, infrastructure and talent, which will
benefit Science SARU and boost its growth .
However, one of the biggest fears in the
industry is the possible loss of creative freedom for the acquired studio. Science
SARU has been known for its distinctive style and ability to take creative
risks. Integration into a larger corporate structure such as TOHO may impose
restrictions and guidance that limit this freedom. However, TOHO has
demonstrated a commitment to quality and innovation in the past, which could
mitigate these risks.
Reaction from the industry and fans has been mixed.
On the one hand, there is excitement about the new opportunities this
acquisition could bring. The prospect of seeing more high-quality
projects and collaborations between TOHO and Science SARU is exciting for many
fans. On the other hand, there are concerns that Science SARU's
innovative spirit and unique approach could be diluted under TOHO management.
