In commemoration of the release of the fourteenth and final compilation volume of Negi Haruba's manga Go-Toubun no Hanayome, this year's issue # 20 of Kodansha publisher Weekly Shonen Magazine featured a special interview between Negi Haruba and Yae Utsumi (Hone ga Kusaru made).
Regarding the meeting between the two, Haruba mentioned: “When the publication of the Rengoku no Karma manga started, the editorial department introduced me to Utsumi as an assistant. I was pretty scared at the time. "
Utsumi commented, "That was my first time. At the time I was thinking of relearning about manga when the Shinkai Tsuzuri no Dokkairoku manga had a week to go. I was very happy to have been invited. ”
On the difficulty of writing manga popular enough to be adapted to animation, Haruba commented: “It is very difficult to 'betray' the reader's expectations after drawing the end of the story. In fact, I'm pretty sure development was pretty disappointing for readers. "
"Regarding the work, I was thinking of two development paths, one in which the reader was surprised with a sudden event and the other in which he left a clue in advance," he revealed. “In the first, it was through Futarou discovering a photograph in which he remembered having already met the quintuplets on their journey five years ago. And in the second, the clue was to reveal Rena's true identity in advance by showing the other four quintuplets once Rena left the scene, I wonder if the reader had been surprised to know who Rena was from the start. ”
In response to this, Utsumi asked: "Do you think that Go-Toubun no Hanayome was a work that generated a lot of expectation among the fans, mainly in the fact of knowing who was going to be chosen?", To which Haruba answered affirmatively.
“During its serialization, there were quite a few theories. I was very happy with the way the fans tried to predict the development of the story and I am very satisfied, plus this made my job a lot easier. My best effort was dedicated to creating a work that made readers think and made them believe that it was a good development despite not ending as they would have liked, "he concluded.
Additionally, in the same issue of the magazine it was reported that the author Negi Haruba is already working on his next work. "I have to do my best again," he added. In this regard, the only thing the author commented is that it will not be a romantic comedy.
For its part, the Go-Toubun no Hanayome manga was published in the pages of Kodansha publisher Weekly Shonen Magazine between August 2017 and February 2020. The publisher will publish the latest compilation volume on April 17. The play inspired an anime adaptation released in January 2019, and a confirmed second season for October 2020.
