The work is a spin-off of the Takao Yaguchi manga, Tsurikichi Sanpei, which was published in Kodansha publishing house Weekly Shonen Magazine between 1973 and 1983, with a total of 57 compilation volumes. This manga inspired a 109-episode anime adaptation produced by Nippon Animation Studios and released in April 1980.
