For its part, Show By Rock !! is originally a rhythm game for smartphones developed and distributed by Geechs in conjunction with Sanrio. The game was released in July 2013 for iOS devices and in June 2014 for Android devices. Within the game, the user can choose between 26 different bands, each with its own musical style and cards to choose from. Players will use teams of up to five cards, and a supporting character, to finally participate in musical battles.
The installment has inspired four anime adaptations. The first two were made by Bones Studios, and in fact, it was the first night anime based on a Sanrio franchise. The first season aired in Japan between April and June 2015, followed by a second season aired between October and December 2016.
The third season was animated by Kinema Citrus studios, and aired between January and March 2020. Finally, a fourth season that will include all the characters presented to date and will be titled Show By Rock !! Stars !! It is currently in production and no new details have been announced.
