The Mainichi Shimbun newspaper reported that the Japanese tax authorities have accused animation studios Ufotable and its founder, representative director and president Hikaru Kondo, of having evaded paying taxes totaling 139 million yen (more than $ 1.28 million).
The newspaper quoted a source close to the investigation, which reported that Kondo concealed about 30% of the profits from some of the company's Tokyo-based restaurants, and kept that money with him. The reduced income was also altered in the company's accounting books for the years 2015, 2017 and 2018, hiding more than 446 million yen (more than 4.11 million dollars). Therefore, the total amount owed in tax is supposedly 110 million yen (1.01 million dollars) in corporate taxes and 29 million yen (267 thousand dollars) in consumption tax. According to the newspaper source, both Ufotable and Kondo allegedly used the unpaid tax money to finance the company's business.
Kondo's representative attorney apologized to the fans and the people involved for the inconvenience caused, and assured that the director has already filed a corrected tax return and made the corresponding payment.
