For their part, Kawahara and HiMA began publishing the light novels through the Kadokawa publisher's Dengeki Bunko imprint in February 2009. The publisher published the twenty-fourth volume in August 2019.
The play has inspired several manga adaptations and a 24-episode anime adaptation produced by Sunrise Studios under the direction of Masakazu Obara and scripts written by Hiroyuki Yoshino , released in April 2012.

Haruyuku Arita is overweight and suffers from bullying in high school, so she seeks refuge in video games. But her life takes a drastic turn when, one day, she discovers that all of her scoring records have been beaten by "Kuroyukihime," the popular vice president of the student council. She then invites him to the council room and introduces him to the "Brain Burst," a program that allows its user to accelerate brain waves to the point where time stops. Brain Burst also serves as an augmented reality game, and in order to earn more points to accelerate, users must win duels against others. However, if a user loses all their points they will also lose access to Brain Burst permanently.
Kuroyukihime explains that she decided to show this to Haruyuki because she needs his help. She wants to find the creator of the program and discover the secret behind its creation, and for this she must defeat a faction of powerful leaders within the game, as well as reach the maximum level.
