Shuichiro Moriyama, the voice of Porco Rosso, passed away

The agency of the television actor and voice actor, Shuichiro Moriyama, reported that Moriyama passed away on February 8 at 9:10 p.m. (Japan Standard Time) in a hospital in Saitama Prefecture, due to pneumonia. His family will hold a private funeral for the artist.




Shuichiro Moriyama was born in Nagoya City on July 26, 1934 and had worked professionally for 63 years. He starred in the soap opera Yell aired on NHK television last year, as well as the historical epic drama Tokugawa Toshinobu.


Perhaps his most recognized participation both inside and outside of Japan was to have played the lead in the film directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli, Kurenai no Buta (Porco Rosso). His numerous other roles included supporting roles in productions such as Sayonara Ginga Tetsudou 999: Andromeda Shuuchakueki (Adieu Galaxy Express 999), Captain, Jormungand, and Juubee Ninpuuchou (Ninja Scroll). He also voiced the lead in the Japanese television series Kojak (as well as other roles for actor Telly Savalas) and narrated the live-action TV Asahi series Trick.
