The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominations for the ninety-third annual Academy Awards (Oscars) earlier today. Actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas and actor Nick Jonas revealed the nominations during a live performance, revealing at the same time that no Japanese animated film (anime) got the nomination. For the Best Animated Film Award, the nominations went to Onward, Over the Moon, A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, Soul, and Wolfwalkers.
Japanese animated films that had been announced for consideration for this nomination included the Ufotable Studios-produced film Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Ressha-hen; Studio Ghibli's first CGI animated film, Aya to Majo (Earwig and the Witch); Studio Color's original film, Nakitai Watashi wa Neko wo Kaburu (A Whisker Away); as well as the films Lupine III: The First (Lupine the 3rd: The First), Kimi to, Nami ni Noretara (Ride Your Wave) and Ongaku (On-Gaku: Our Sound).
Finally, the ninety-third installment of the Academy Awards (Oscars) will take place on April 25, delayed for two weeks due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on planning. It should be noted that the film adaptation of Kimetsu no Yaiba was released for a time in the United States in order to be considered for this nomination.
