On April 14, the new film by director Makoto Shinkai , Suzume no Tojimari ( Suzume's Door-Locking ) , opened in theaters in the United States . With this premiere, the tape was finally available to receive the corresponding reviews through the popular platform Rotten Tomatoes . Surprisingly, the film got 99 percent positive reviews from the audience , and 96 percent positive from critics.

These two figures are quite spectacular within this platform, especially now that Rotten Tomatoes became a trend before the official premiere of The Super Mario Bros. Movie , which received 58 percent positive reviews from specialized critics, contrasting the critics a 96 percent positive from the audience. Anyway, Suzume no Tojimari already had an enormous success in Japan, considering that it is currently the fourth highest-grossing anime film in the history of Japanese cinema .

Let's review some of the reviews:

  • « A challenging portrait of a young woman who needs to put her priorities in order ».
  • Makoto Shinkai's new animated feature is a captivating, romantic and often very funny road movie that continues the Japanese filmmaker's fruitful obsession with teen sci-fi fantasy ."
  • Her true love affair is with the things of everyday life, which makes her almost unbearably attractive and worth fighting for ."
  • « Visually striking and captivating. An extraordinary and spiritual journey that reflects on grief, family and friendship ».
  • « Suzume is another step in the brilliant career of a filmmaker who seems ever closer to reaching narrative and aesthetic maturity ».
  • By taking the focus away from the romance, [Makoto Shinkai] made Suzume's romance absolutely amazing ."
  • It's a movie full of creative ideas, and too many of them fall through the cracks when the credits roll... [But] Suzume is still a fun movie with some likable moments ."
  • Suzume is Shinkai's biggest and arguably most complex film, and some parts feel more personal due to the invocation of the true story ."
  • Sometimes too dignified for its own good, the film nonetheless has boundless ambition and the courage to place weighty themes at the heart of a children's film ."
  • « Shinkai has forged his own path with his films, like his earlier “Weathering With You”, basing elaborate and detailed fantasies on real-world fears of natural disasters and persistent grief ».
  • At heart, this is an optimistic tale, in which not even Suzume's own childhood experience of pain...is beyond the reach of healing ."
  • « Legendary Japanese author Makoto Shinkai once again dazzles audiences with his latest stunning masterpiece, Suzume ».
  • Shinkai's film is full of seismic portals, Japanese legends, and whirlwinds of love, fear, and forgiveness, and it seems more intended for teenagers and adults than for young children ."
  • With Suzume, Shinkai has taken elements of his previous films to another level to build something new and wonderful, with a story that strikes a chord and keeps you on your toes at all times. "
