Makoto Shinkai , director recognized for his successful films such as “ Your Name ” (2016) and “ Suzume ” (2022), shared a message with his followers on Twitter to wish them a Happy New Year 2025, while reflecting on his 2024. In his post, Shinkai revealed that much of his time during the past year was dedicated to the creation of his next film project. , which he describes as a “great joy” to be able to build a completely new world from scratch, something that filled him with satisfaction to do with his work team.

• « Happy New Year! 2024 was a year I spent working on my new film. It has been a great joy to build a new world that no one has ever seen before from scratch with my colleagues. This year, I will strive to be able to inform you in some way about the project. I hope that 2025 will be a smooth year for all of you . »
As for details of the film, Shinkai stressed that he has fully dedicated himself to the creative process, and although he did not reveal any more specific information, his enthusiasm for this new world is evident. This project follows the director's tradition of creating visually dazzling and emotionally resonant universes, as have been his previous works.
Shinkai’s fans, known for their devotion, also have reason to be excited about the near future. The live-action adaptation of “5 Centimeters per Second,” one of his most acclaimed works, is scheduled for release in the fall of 2025. The film will star SixTONES member Hokuto Matsumura as the main character Takaki Tono. Matsumura previously worked with Shinkai as the voice of Souta Munakata in Suzume, strengthening the connection to the director’s universe.
On another front, Shinkai is also involved in a significant project for his hometown of Saku City in Nagano Prefecture. The production company CoMix Wave Films, responsible for his films, will be opening a new cinema, CWF CINEMAS, which will open its doors in the summer of 2026. Shinkai will play a leading role in the establishment of this cinema, investing through his own company Shinkai Creative Co., Ltd., while Noritaka Kawaguchi, founder of CoMix Wave Films, will serve as the president and CEO of the new cinema chain.
This cinema, in addition to being an exhibition space, could become the premiere venue for Shinkai's long-awaited new film, which only increases fans' expectations for the coming years. 2024 was a year full of creative work for Shinkai, but 2025 promises to be even more exciting, with new projects in the works and the chance for his fans to experience more of his visual and narrative magic.
