Kagurabachi, Ashita no Joe, and more compete for the 2025 Eisner Awards

Comic  -Con International has revealed the nominees for the 2025 Will Eisner Awards , considered the "Oscars" of the comics world. Among the most notable categories is Best U.S. International Edition — Asia , where manga once again takes center stage.


Manga nominated in the main category


A total of six works are competing for the award this year, combining both legendary classics and recent titles that have caused a sensation :


  • Ashita no Joe: Fighting for Tomorrow , by Asao Takamori and Tetsuya Chiba (translated by Asa Yonola)
  • Hereditary Triangle , by Fumiya Hayashi (translated by Alethea and Athena Nibley)
  • Kagurabachi , by Takeru Hokazono (translated by Camellia Nieh)
  • Last Quarter , by Ai Yazawa (translated by Max Greenway)
  • Search and Destroy , by Atsushi Kaneko , based on Dororo by Osamu Tezuka (translated by Ben Applegate)
  • Tokyo These Days , by Taiyo Matsumoto (translated by Michael Arias)

In addition to the main category, manga is also present in other sections of the Eisner Awards:


  • My Journey to Her , by Yūna Hirasawa , is competing for Best Digital Comic .
  • Viz Media's reissue of X-Men: The Manga Remastered is nominated in the category of Best Collection/Archival Project — Comics .

This latest work featured Hirofumi Ichikawa , Hiroshi Higuchi , Kōji Yasue , Miyako Cojima , Rei Nakahara and Reiji Hagiwara , with editing by David Brothers and design by Fawn Lau .


Other nominees linked to Japanese culture


IDW is also up for Best Anthology with Godzilla's 70th Anniversary , while Kelly and Sam Goto 's Seattle Samurai: A Cartoonist's Perspective of the Japanese American Experience has been nominated for Best Graphic Album — Reissue .


Posthumous recognition and manga legends


This year, the legendary Shigeru Mizuki will be posthumously inducted into the Eisner Awards Hall of Fame . Additionally, the celebrated Junji Ito has been nominated for induction into this select group, in recognition of his legacy in Japanese horror.


Winners will be announced in July


The results of the 2025 Eisner Awards will be announced at the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con , starting Thursday, July 24 (UTC+2, Spain time) . The ceremony will be a key meeting point for discovering which works will shape the future of manga and comics worldwide.
