This
Friday, Square Enix announced that the manga Smoking
Behind the Supermarket with You (Super no Ura by Yani Sū Futari),
the work of author Jinushi, will have an anime adaptation that will
premiere in 2026 through the Japanese channel TBS.
To
commemorate the news, Jinushi shared a special illustration celebrating
the announcement, which was quickly spread on social media.
What is
this unusual romantic comedy about?
The story
revolves around Sasaki, a middle-aged salaried employee who leads a
monotonous and exhausting life. Her only moment of daily relief is visiting a
nearby supermarket to see the smile of Yamada, a kind cashier.
However, one day, when he arrives, he discovers that she has already finished
her shift.
Frustrated
and looking for a space to smoke, he stumbles upon a mysterious young woman in
a leather jacket named Tayama, who invites him to a secret
smoking area. Thus begins an unexpected and refreshing relationship.
A manga
with recognition and great growth
The manga
began publication on X/Twitter in March 2022, and quickly
gained popularity. In August of the same year, it began its official
serialization in Square Enix's Big Gangan magazine.
Currently,
the work has six compilation volumes, the last of which was
released on January 24. The seventh volume will
hit stores on July 25.
In
addition, it has been distributed in English through Manga UP! Global since
April 2023, and is also available on Comikey, BookWalker,
and Square Enix Manga and Books, which published its first physical
volume in English in February 2024.
Recognitions
that guarantee its quality
In
2023, Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You was nominated
for the 16th Manga Taisho Awards, where it took eighth
place, cementing its place as one of the most outstanding stories of the
year.
With its
arrival in anime in 2026, this work promises to further excite its readers and
capture new fans with its mix of urban melancholy, unusual romance,
and endearing characters.
