Shinshokan's Wings magazine announced in its September issue that Tomato Soup's Kanshin Smbat (known as Disloyal Retainer Smbat) manga will go on an extended hiatus. Its return is scheduled for the June 2026 edition, which will be published in April 2026.

A warrior torn between loyalty and rebellion

The plot of the manga focuses on Smbat II, a historical character belonging to the House of Orbelian, a noble dynasty that ruled the Kingdom of Georgia under the domination of the Mongol Empire. Though forced to feign loyalty, Smbat II makes no secret of his disdain for his masters and cunningly seeks to undermine their dominance from within, shaping a narrative fraught with intrigue and political tension.

Trajectory of the work and a little about its author

Tomato Soup started publishing Disloyal Retainer Smbat in August 2023 through Wings magazine. The first compilation volume was released in December 2024, quickly consolidating an audience interested in its historical and political approach.

In parallel, the author is also working on A Witch's Life in Mongol (Tenmaku no Jādūgar), a story that has been published since September 2021 on Akita Shoten's Souffle website. This series released its fifth volume on April 16 and has inspired an animated adaptation titled Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia, scheduled to premiere next year.

A Witch's Life in Mongolia is currently published bimonthly in both Souffle and Mystery Bonita magazine from March 6. However, this work will also be affected by the author's maternity leave, and will go on hiatus from this summer. It is expected to resume publication over the next year.
