During its
panel at Anime NYC, publisher Dark Horse Comics confirmed
that it has acquired the license for John Tarachine's manga Credits
Roll Into the Sea (Umi ga Hashiru Endroll). Although a release
date has not yet been revealed, the news has sparked great interest among
international readers.
A story
about grief and second chances
The play
follows Umiko, a 65-year-old woman who is going through mourning
after losing her husband. One day he decides to return to the cinema after
decades, where he meets Kai, a young film student. Fascinated by
the audience's reactions, Umiko gets carried away by the conversation with Kai,
who senses her curiosity about the seventh art and encourages her to explore
her own feelings. Thus begins Umiko's unexpected journey into the world of
filmmaking.
Career
and recognitions
Tarachine
launched the manga in Akita Shoten's Mystery Bonita magazine
in October 2020. So far, the publisher has published eight compilation volumes,
the most recent being released on July 17. The story will come to
its conclusion with the ninth volume.
The series
has received multiple accolades: it topped the list of female readers in
the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2022 guide and ranked number six in
the 2023 edition. In addition, she was a finalist in the 15th Manga
Taisho in 2022 and was nominated for the prestigious Tezuka
Osamu Cultural Award in both its 27th and 29th editions.
Other
works by John Tarachine
The author
is also known for Witch of Thistle Castle (Azami no Shiro
no Majo), published on Coamix's Comic Tatan site
between 2019 and 2020, with a total of four volumes. The work was licensed in
English by Titan Comics, thus consolidating Tarachine's
international projection.
