After more
than a year of silence since its announcement in January 2023, it has finally
been revealed that the long-awaited sequel to Made in Abyss: The Golden
City of the Scorching Sun will be presented in the form of a film
saga. The first part, titled Made in Abyss: Mezameru Shinpi (Mystery
Awakening), is scheduled to premiere sometime in 2026.
Studio
Kinema Citrus returns
for production, keeping the original creative team: Masayuki Kojima directing, Hideyuki
Kurata as screenwriter, and character designers Kazuchika Kise and Yuka
Kuroda. The main cast will also return to give life to the endearing
characters of the series.
New
faces in an increasingly dark world
Along with
the announcement, a promotional image has been revealed
featuring new characters Tepaste and Cravagli, who
will play a key role in this new adventure deep into the Abyss.
A
symphonic concert to celebrate the return
As part of
the celebrations for this important announcement, a special Film
Concert has been confirmed to take place on February 8, 2026 at
the Nakano ZERO in Tokyo. The event will be attended by
composer Kevin Penkin, who will conduct the orchestra live. The
voice actors of the series will also participate and there will be musical
performances by Takeshi Saito and KIHOW (from
the group MYTH&ROID).
A legacy
of darkness and wonder
Made in
Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun aired between July 6 and
September 28, 2022, as a direct sequel to the 2017 first season, which was
critically acclaimed for its intense atmosphere and detailed animation. Season
two continued Riko, Reg, and Nanachi's journey
into the deepest levels of the Abyss, facing unimaginable horrors and ancient
secrets that no one has ever lived to tell.
With this
new film saga, the Made in Abyss universe expands once again,
promising to take viewers into an even deeper, more emotional and disturbing
story.
