The viral
phenomenon of cute little creatures makes the leap to the big screen. An
official website has been launched to announce Eiga Chiikawa: Ningyo no
Shima no Himitsu (Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island),
the first anime film in the franchise. The project revealed a visual teaser and
confirmed its premiere for the summer 2026.
The
original creator of the manga, Nagano- not only is he credited for
the original story, but he is also writing the script for the film. Under his
supervision, direction falls to Kei Oikawa (Uma Musume
Pretty Derby, Hinamatsuri, Oregairu) in the
studio Cygames Pictures. Distribution will be in charge
of TOHO.
Synopsis
of the Island Arch
The film
will adapt the popular arc of the manga known as the "Mermaid Arc" or
"Island Arc", originally published on X (Twitter) in 2023. The story
begins when Chiikawa and Hachiware they find
a flyer that invites them to a "special island". Attracted by
promises of great rewards and delicious food, they decide to travel
alongside Usagi and Rakko, without knowing the
mysteries that await them.
