School
romances where appearances can be deceiving always have a special place among
fans, and this time it's the turn of one of the most beloved comedies of recent
years. This Thursday, April 23, the publisher Kodansha made
the official announcement that the popular shoujo manga created
by Naruki, Glasses with a Chance of Delinquent (Megane
Tokidoki Yankee-kun), is preparing its own animated adaptation for
television. To celebrate this great news that has been brewing for more than
five years, the original author shared a beautiful commemorative
illustration that gives us the first glimpse of what this unusual
couple will look like in anime format.
As is often
the case with early-stage revelations, the production committee has decided to
keep the suspense going. Kodansha's statement completely omitted details about
the animation studio in charge, the technical team or the release window.
Similarly, fans will have to arm themselves with patience to find out which
voice actors (seiyuus) will be chosen to play the protagonists, as the cast
remains an absolute secret under lock and key. For now, all visual attention
falls on the clean and expressive stroke of the illustration released by
Naruki.
The
allure of a rising shoujo romance
The path of
this work to the small screen has been one of constant growth. Published
uninterruptedly in Bessatsu Friend magazine since January
2021, the series has been able to build a solid fan base thanks to its light
mix of comedy and genuinely sweet moments. Currently, the story compiles 10
volumes in print in the Japanese market, and volume 11 is scheduled to go on
sale on May 13, proving that serialization is in excellent commercial health
just in time to boost the debut of its animated version.
What secret
does the perfect boy in the class hide?
The premise
of this romantic comedy moves us away from heavy dramas to
give us a dynamic of "opposites attract" full of entanglements. The
story follows Momose, a high school student who only wants in life
to have a peaceful, quiet school environment totally away from any gang member,
bully or problem student.
His inner
peace radar completely fails when he begins to interact with Ichikura,
his classmate. At first glance, he is an extremely quiet boy, with black hair
and impeccable glasses who looks like the perfect model student. However, it
turns out that during high school, Ichikura was a rather feared infamous
delinquent boy. Although he swears to Momose that he has left that life
behind, his old *yankee* instincts come to the fore and he throws blows
whenever the situation warrants it. Now, poor Momose will have to deal with the
mission of keeping her partner's noisy past a secret, while an undeniable
chemistry begins to blossom between the two.
