After so
many years being My Melody's self-proclaimed rival, it seems that the time has
finally come for her to stay in the spotlight. Sanrio announced that Kuromi
will have his first film as a protagonist, with a release scheduled for
2027 in theaters in Japan. The news was announced on October 31, taking
advantage of Halloween and, of course, the birthday of the little troublemaker
who has become one of the company's most popular characters.
The
announcement was accompanied by a promotional image and a special video in
which Kuromi herself celebrates that she will finally have her film. Even her
inseparable companion Baku appears to congratulate her, while she takes the
opportunity to thank her followers, known as the KUROMIES, for all the support
she has received. For now, the film does not have an exact release date,
although it was confirmed that the distributor GAGA will be in charge of
bringing it to Japanese theaters.
As for the
story, Sanrio has not yet revealed a synopsis or those responsible for the
production, so we will have to wait to find out what kind of problems Kuromi
will end up causing in his cinematic adventure. It has also not been confirmed
if My Melody will have any participation, although it would be quite curious to
see a film of its eternal rival without the two ending up crossing paths at
some point.
Kuromi
has come a long way since his debut
Although he
is currently one of Sanrio's most recognizable faces, Kuromi did not begin his
journey as part of an independent line of products. Her first appearance was
in the anime Onegai My Melody, released in April 2005, where she was
introduced as the rival of the adorable bunny. Her rebellious personality,
black hood, and signature pink skull ended up making her a favorite of many
fans.
And boy has
he managed to make a name for himself. In the 2026 edition of the Sanrio
Character Ranking, Kuromi achieved fourth place in popularity,
remaining among the five most voted characters of the company. Her popularity
also allowed her to star in the Kuromi's Pretty Journey animated shorts
in 2023 and 2024, as well as sharing the screen with her eternal rival in My
Melody & Kuromi, the stop-motion animated series released on Netflix
during July 2025.
As if that
were not enough, in October 2025 she also officially debuted as a musical
artist under the name KUROMI, through the label TOY'S FACTORY. Now he will make
the leap to cinemas with his first feature film, although there is still no
news about an international premiere. Sanrio assured that he will share
information about other countries and territories when the distribution plans
are finalized.
