Studio Ghibli continues to dominate at the Japanese box office

The live-action film based on the manga written and illustrated by Junko, Watashi ga Motete Dousunda, debuted at the box office with a gross of 51,320,380 yen (approximately $ 479,000) in its first weekend, taking fourth place in the ranking. The film was released on July 10.


Norihisa Hiranuma (High & Low) was in charge of directing the film, and she also wrote the script for the series with Nami Kikkawa, Shouhei Fukuda, Kei Watanabe and Daisuke Kamijou. The musical group Girls2 performed the main theme song entitled "Watashi ga Motete Dousunda".

However, all four Studio Ghibli films currently screening in theaters ranked in the Top 10 Revenue, including three films in the top three positions. Studio Ghibli and the TOHO theater chain launched a campaign to screen four studio films in 396 theaters in Japan since June 26.




The film Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Spirited Away) made 86,785,950 yen (approximately $ 809,400) this weekend and 493,694,600 yen (approximately $ 4.60 million) accumulated in 2020, followed by Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke) with 82,683,750 yen (approximately $ 771,000) this weekend and 473,893,050 yen ($ 4.41 million) accumulated in 2020; and Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä (Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind), were the films that obtained the first three positions, respectively. Finally, the movie Ged Senki (Tales from Earthsea) took 10th place this weekend at the box office.
