Illegal streaming site KissAnime is shut down

One of the largest illegal anime streaming sites, KissAnime, announced its final closure through its official website and social networks. The site was taken offline earlier today, so anyone trying to access the site will only see a screen indicating that the files on the website have been removed due to multiple copyright lawsuits. This also applied to its spin-off site, KissManga.

KissAnime was one of the largest illegal anime streaming sites and was particularly well known to English-speaking audiences. The site offered series and movies usually taken directly from legal providers like Crunchyroll and Funimation. Furthermore, manga chapters were published on KissManga without editorial approval.

However, administrators still appear to have access to the domains, so it is not yet clear what led to the closure of these pages then. Some reports suggest it could be directly related to the expansion of Japan's Copyright Law, but nothing has been confirmed.
According to the statistics site SimilarWeb, the KissAnime site recently had 95 million visits a year. In the Alexa ranking, the site is currently in fifth place. Like other successful illegal streaming sites, some other domains could be found on the internet with the same name, however, it should be noted that they are not the original.
