This second season is scheduled for release in Japan on January 9, 2021 and, according to the distribution information of the Blu-ray/DVD volumes, is confirmed with a total of eight episodes. The series will be broadcast in parallel with the animated adaptation of the spin-off manga Hataraku Saibou Black, which is produced by another studio, but will be broadcast in the same programming block one after the other.
Shimizu has been publishing the original manga in Kodansha's Monthly Shonen Sirius magazine since March 2015, and has inspired a number of spin-off series based on other cell types. After a two-year break, the manga resumed on October 26th.
