Druckmann responded with five franchises, which included The Punisher, Half-Life, Ghost Rider, Hotline Miami and Cowboy Bebop.

The original series featured a total of 26 episodes originally aired in April 1998. The work inspired a manga adaptation by Cain Kuga, who published it in Kadokawa's Monthly Asuka Fantasy DX magazine between September 1997 and June 1998, with a total of two volumes.

In fact, when Cowboy Bebop first aired in the spring of 1998 on TV Tokyo in Japan, only episodes 2, 3, 7-15 and 18 were aired, concluding with a special summary known as "Yose Atsume Blues". The decision was due to the controversy generated by the broadcast of Neon Genesis Evangelion, so much of the original series was taken off the air for violent content.

Subsequently, the satellite channel WOWOW picked up the series in the fall of the same year and aired it in its entirety uncensored. Thus, Cowboy Bebop was not a ratings success in Japan, or even could have been considered a failure in its original broadcast, but it sold over 19,000 DVD units on its release and won multiple awards for its cast. The West was the region where this series became most popular, after multiple channels, including Adult Swim, aired it over and over again establishing it as an immensely popular series for its references.
