Mamoru Hosoda's New Film Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime Debuts First at the Box Office

It was reported that the new animated film directed by Mamoru Hosoda (Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo, Summer Wars, Bakemono no Ko, Mirai no Mirai) and produced by Studio Chizu, Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime (The Dragon and Freckled Princess, or also Belle ), debuted at No. 1 at the Japanese box office on its opening weekend. The film sold more than 600,000 tickets for a gross of 891,663,200 yen (about $ 8.14 million) in its first three days.



In fact, the movie sold more than 459,000 tickets for a gross of 679,995,700 yen on Saturday and Sunday alone. This debut surpasses that of Mamoru Hosoda's most successful film to date, Bakemono no Ko (The Boy and the Beast), which eventually ended with a profit of 5.85 billion yen (about $ 53 million). Finally, the film was released on July 16 in theaters in Japan, and also in 38 IMAX cinemas, being the first film produced by Hosoda to be screened in this type of theater.

Synopsis of Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime


Our protagonist, Suzu, is a 17-year-old high school student, who lives in the countryside of Kochi Prefecture with her father, after losing her mother at a young age. She loved to sing with her mother more than anything else, but as a result of her death she is no longer able to sing. It wasn't long before she and her father grew increasingly distant from each other, and Suzu closed her heart to the rest of the world.

When Suzu felt that writing music was the only remaining purpose in her life, she discovers the huge online space known as "U", where she takes on the personality of her, Belle. Another me, another reality, we are no longer limited to one world. Suzu quickly realizes that when she's inside "U" as her avatar, Belle, she can sing quite naturally. As she continues to showcase her own music in the virtual world, she quickly becomes the rising star of "U". However, that surprise is short-lived. Suddenly, a mysterious dragon-shaped creature appears before her ...
