The Japanese legwear company Okamoto conducted a nationwide survey survey asking what season of the year high school students wore their legs bare.80% of the girls surveyed answered that in summer and 70% in spring and summer. Meanwhile, 40% answered that even in winter they go bare-legged and, by region, in Tokyo and Hiroshima this rose to more than 50%. Even in Hokkaido, with very cold winters, one in ten students goes bare-legged.

The students who said they did not wear socks or stockings even in winter were asked if they felt cold in their legs, to which 84.1% answered that to a greater extent.  While 31.4% said they endured the cold because they thought it was more elegant to wear bare legs, 39.9% said they did not like to wear stockings or socks even in winter.

A question about the length of the skirts revealed that Tokio had the shortest skirts by far. 50.5% of those surveyed in Tokyo responded that their skirts reached above the knee, more than twice as many as in other regions. The response rate of those who responded that their skirts reached below the knee was around 30% in areas other than Tokyo, while in the capital itself, the rate was only 7.9%.
