The official Twitter account of the digital service Shonen Jump Plus of Shueisha announced that the one-shot manga Look Back of the author of Chainsaw Man , Tatsuki Fujimoto , has been modified after publication due to comments from readers about " inappropriate expressions ". The changes were made "out of the desire to avoid depicting something that could be related to the promotion of prejudice or discrimination ."

In the one-shot, a man who claims to hear voices and have a " paranoid episode " walks into an art school with an ax, claiming that a student has plagiarized his art. Although the event continues to occur in the modified version, both the references to the " paranoid episode " and the motivation for the plagiarism have been replaced by a different text.

In the Japanese version, the line “ According to your statement, you heard voices insulting you during an episode of paranoia ” was replaced by a line that said that you intended to kill the first person you laid eyes on. The lines “ They are wrong! It's mine, right ?! It was my idea first! You plagiarized my art, right? ”Were replaced by lines that hinted that the artist's creations were looking at him over his shoulder and making fun of him.

Although the manga was well received in Japan, racking up over 1.2 million views on Shonen Jump Plus , some readers noted the similarities between the events in the manga and the Kyoto Animation arson incident , which occurred two years ago, on May 18. July 2019. Concerns were also raised that portraying someone with schizophrenia as a mass murderer could stigmatize mental illness. Finally, the Chainsaw Man author's one-shot debuted at Shonen Jump Plus in Japan on July 19. The English version of the manga in MANGA Plus (available at this link) has not yet been modified at the time of publication of this article.
