 Last weekend, director Makoto Shinkai 's new film Suzume no Tojimari ( Suzume's Door-Locking ) opened in theaters in China, the second biggest market behind hits from previous films like Kimi no Na wa ( Your Name ) and Tenki no Ko ( Weathering With You ). Suzume no Tojimari was no exception, having such a spectacular opening weekend that it propelled it to become the ninth most successful anime film in all of world cinema history.



According to Makoto Shinkai , in the first weekend of Suzume no Tojimari 's three-day release in China, the film grossed 340 million yuan (over $49.35 million) with more than 10 million tickets sold . This figure far exceeds the 1.88 billion yen (over $14.28 million) opening weekend of Suzume no Tojimari in Japan, which had already been the best opening weekend for a Makoto Shinkai film. in his native country, and it is the best opening in China for a film by the director.

As for other Asian territories that Suzume no Tojimari has been released in , South Korea has grossed $23.92 million, Taiwan $5.91 million, Hong Kong $2.49 million, and of course Japan $106.38 million as of last week. All in all, Suzume has grossed $188.12 million worldwide as of March 27, making it the ninth-highest-grossing anime film of all time and unseating Pokémon: The First Movie in the top ten , in where it has been since 1999.
