Netflix is developing an animated
series based on the popular video game “ Minecraft .” The
platform will produce the project together with Mojang Studios, the Swedish
developer of the game. Plot details are not yet known, but according to
Netflix, the series “ will feature an original story with new
characters, showing the world of Minecraft in a new light .”
The series, which will be computer
animated, is being developed by WildBrain, the Canadian studio behind Netflix
animation projects such as “Sonic Prime,” “Ninjago: Dragons Rising” and “Carmen
Sandiego.” In 2022, Netflix premiered a revival of
WildBrain's “Johnny Test,” which originally aired on WB and later on Cartoon
Network for six seasons from 2005 to 2014. The studio has also produced “The
Snoopy Show” and “Snoopy in Space” on Apple TV+ and “Fireman Sam” on Channel 5
in the United Kingdom.
Mojang released “Minecraft” in 2011. With its
signature pixelated style, the game allows players to build 3D worlds with
colored blocks. More than 140 million people play “Minecraft” every
month, which has spawned the spin-offs “Minecraft: Story Mode,” “Minecraft
Earth,” “Minecraft Dungeons” and “Minecraft Legends.”
This isn't the only narrative adaptation of
"Minecraft" that Mojang has in the works. The company, owned
by Microsoft, has also prepared a film backed by Warner Bros. and Legendary
with Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks and Emma Myers as protagonists
and Jared Hess as director. The premiere is scheduled for April 4,
2025.
