Ten years
have recently passed since the anime adaptation of the “ No Game No Life ”
light novels aired. Although the production was expected to make some important
announcement, in the end the franchise's official media remained silent,
disappointing fans for another year.
Despite
being one of the most requested anime sequels, the second season of “No Game No
Life” remains unannounced. The series also continues to be highly regarded in Japan, with the
books ranking among the top ten best-sellers. With all this, what could
be the reason for the lack of a second season?
The
accusation of plagiarism
In 2016,
the author of “No Game No Life”, Yuu Kamiya, was caught tracing the designs of
different artists in the medium for his own illustrations. Fortunately, the situation was
resolved quickly, as Yuu Kamiya apologized for his actions and, since then,
there have been no more controversies related to this.
Although
this incident could be one of the reasons why the second season of “No Game No
Life” has not been given the green light, it is worth noting that a new
movie titled “No Game No Life Zero” was released in 2017, which indicating that
the plagiarism controversy should have little to no impact on the sequel's
chances.
However, it
should be noted that plagiarism is taken very seriously in Japan, and the
consequences can be serious. In the Japanese entertainment industry,
plagiarism scandals have led to the cancellation of series and even the
dissolution of musical groups.
Given the
seriousness of the matter in Japan, there is a remote possibility that the
decision not to move forward with the second season of No Game No Life is
related to this incident. The studio and production committee involved
may be hesitant to partner with a series whose author has been embroiled in a
plagiarism controversy, even if it was quickly resolved.
The Curse
of Madhouse
Another
possible reason for the lack of a second season is that the first season of “No
Game No Life” was done too well. The animation was of such high quality
and the series became so popular that the Madhouse studio might fear not
meeting expectations with a sequel. This information comes directly
from the author himself.
Yuu
Kamiya previously stated on Twitter that he also doesn't know why there is no
news about the second season of “No Game No Life.” He stressed that money is not
the issue, and that the only reason he believes is preventing a sequel from
being greenlit is that the first season was done too well.
« So
I can't tell you the reason why there is no second season, but it is not a
money problem, much less with someone else. Perhaps the problem is that
“it was done too well”, so much so that it is difficult to make a second season
with the same quality ,” Kamiya tweeted.
Although
the reasons for the lack of a second season of “No Game No Life” remain
uncertain, fans should not lose hope. In recent years, many old anime series have received
continuations or remakes, proving that it's never too late for a beloved series
to return.
