“ Genshin Impact , ” the
popular action role-playing video game developed by miHoYo, periodically
sends surveys to its players to collect demographic data, opinions about the
game, and other relevant information. Players who complete these
surveys are often rewarded with Mora, the in-game currency. However,
the latest survey has generated mixed opinions among Japanese gamers due to a
question that asks for information about their monthly income.
The question in question asks Genshin
Impact players to choose the range their recent net monthly income falls in,
with options ranging from less than $250 to more than $5,000. Fortunately,
the survey allows you to choose the option “ I'd rather not to say ”,
but many players have questioned the implications of this question, especially
considering that Genshin Impact is a gacha game, a system that relies heavily
on microtransactions to obtain rare characters and items.
Players have suggested, half jokingly,
half seriously, that depending on the survey results, miHoYo could try to
“raise the ceiling” and raise prices . Furthermore,
they have expressed their disagreement with the invasive nature of the
question, regardless of the motives behind it. Many agree that different
wording would have been more appropriate, such as: “ How much money do
you spend monthly on hobbies?” ”.
Interestingly, players of “Wuthering Waves,” a
recently released game, have also received a survey, leading to comparisons to
the “Genshin Impact” survey. Wuthering Waves' survey contains more
questions about game quality and user experience, while Genshin Impact's seems
to be more focused on demographics and marketing data .
Considering that Genshin Impact is a free game but
with numerous microtransactions to have more opportunities in the gacha and get
additional characters, it is understandable that miHoYo is interested in
knowing the average income of its players. This information could be valuable
in adjusting your marketing strategies and in-game offers. By knowing
the purchasing power of its player base, the development team could identify opportunities
to optimize its income, offering special packages or adjusting microtransaction
prices .
- « What
do those of Genshin Impact do when they ask for alms? ».
- « The
truth is that I don't know what the intention of this is, so I closed the
application .»
- « I
haven't taken the Genshin Impact questionnaire in over a year, so I cringe
when I see it asking about income and marital status .»
- « Genshin
Impact asked me about my net salary… is it discriminating against my
income? That sounds like my Chinese father to me »
- « In
China, it is normal to ask someone you just met: “How much do they pay
you?” It is normal and not rude, so we should not give it too much
importance .
- « Awww
it's so hard ».
- " It
must be because net salary = turnover limit ."
