My Melody and Kuromi celebrate their anniversary with new series on Netflix

Netflix announced Thursday that My Melody & Kuromi, the new animated series in stop-motion based on the popular characters of Sanrio, will be released worldwide on July 24. The announcement was accompanied by a promotional video that, in addition to showing unpublished images, revealed that the group LE SSERAFIM will interpret the main topic titled “ Kawaii ( Prod. Gen Hoshino ) ”.



Sweet competition in Mariland


History unfolds in the magical world of Mariland, home to both protagonists. My Melody open a pastry shop after finding a mysterious heart in the woods, which unleashes strange events around him. Meanwhile, Kuromi He struggles to attract customers to his Japanese candy store, located right in front.


Both decide to participate in a pastry contest to be judged by the legendary pastry chef Pistachio. However, what starts as a friendly competition will trigger a event that will put all Mariland at risk.


A tribute for a double game



The series commemorates two important dates: the 50th anniversary of My Melody and the 20th anniversary of Kuromi, characters that have accompanied generations of fans since their debut.


The project is led by Tomoki Misato, known for his work in Pui Pui Molcar, and has a script Shūko Nemoto. Production is carried out by TORUKU under the umbrella of WIT STUDIO. The series will consist of 12 episodes, with an approximate duration of 13 minutes each.


Sanrio expands the universe of its characters


My Melody's legacy includes several anime series like Onegai My Melody ( 2005 ), Kuru Kuru Shuffle! ( 2006 ), Sukkiri ( 2007 ) and Kirara ( 2008 ). He also had his own movie in 2012: Onegai My Melody Yū & Ai.


For his part, Kuromi has gained popularity in recent years thanks to the series Kuromi’s Pretty Journey, released on YouTube and TikTok in 2023, followed by its continuation ~ Hachamecha! Multiverse Dasshutsu!~, which arrived in October of the same year with simultaneous dubbing in English.


With this new production, Sanrio and Netflix bet on an endearing and visually innovative narrative to unite nostalgia and new generations.
