published on June 27 the final chapter of the manga Mikako
72-sai (Mikako, 72 years old), the work of author Chie Shinkyū.
A story
about love, grief and technology in old age
The story
revolves around Mikako, a 72-year-old woman who, after losing her
husband, begins a new stage of her life in solitude in the house where they
lived together. Concerned about his well-being, his children and grandchildren
give him a smartphone. Through this device, Mikako discovers her husband's old
account, which triggers a series of emotions and memories that will mark her
new way of facing life.
Career
and publication of the manga
Mikako
72-sai was
originally released on the Comic Zenon website in 2021. The
first compilation volume was published in February 2022, and the
fourth and final volume is scheduled to be released on August 20,
in Japan, which is equivalent to August 20 at 5:00 p.m. in Spain
(UTC+2).
The
author and her most outstanding works
Chie
Shinkyū is
renowned for her sensitivity to portraying everyday life and introspection. His
work Takako-san was completed in February 2021 with
six volumes. However, his most iconic manga is Wakako-zake, which
debuted in 2011 in Monthly Comic Zenon magazine.
Wakako-zake not only gained popularity
among readers, but was also adapted into multiple formats: from a short-episode
anime starring Miyuki Sawashiro to eight seasons of a
live-action series. The first season aired between January and March 2015,
with the most recent one starting on January 8, 2024.
