The long-awaited film Toi-san wa Seishun Shitai! "Baka to Smartphone to Romance to" has released its official trailer via the YouTube channel of Jel, a member of the VTubers group Strawberry Prince. The film is based on the animated web series starring himself and will hit theaters in Japan on July 18, 2025 (local time).

A student comedy with romance, smartphones... and a lot of chaos

The story follows Akane Toi, a high school girl affectionately nicknamed "Toi-san" by her classmates. She just wishes to have a quiet school life, but everything changes when she meets a handsome boy named Jel. Although Toi-san hopes that her life will turn into a school romance, she ends up surrounded by eccentric and absurd characters, which transforms her routine into a comedy full of gags and performances worthy of a variety show.

In this new cinematic installment, Toi-san joins the mysterious "Youth Romance Club", where everyone seeks to explore the "youthful" and the "romantic" from angles as strange as they are fun.

An unexpected live-action appearance

The trailer surprised fans by revealing that comedian Antony, from the duo Matenrou, will appear in the film playing Jel in a live-action version. In his statements, Antony confessed that at first he did not understand anything about the project:

"My manager told me, 'It's an anime, but only you are going to be in live action.' And I thought, what does that mean? Toi-san? Huh? I saw the series for the first time and thought: There are still so many interesting things that I don't know! I couldn't refuse to participate. The shoot was complete chaos, but I had a lot of fun. I don't know how it's all going to turn out, but like everyone else, I'm looking forward to the premiere!"

The film is directed by Mankyu (The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague) at the Seven Arcs studio. The script is by Yoichi Kato (THE iDOLM@STER Million Live!), while Akemi Kobayashi (Love After World Domination) adapts the character designs. The original music is composed by Hiromi Mizutani (Food for the Soul).

A star-studded voice cast

Toi-san promises a cinematic experience full of absurd humor, unpredictable situations and a youthful approach that is not afraid to break out of the mold. Without a doubt, one of the most peculiar premieres of the Japanese summer.
