GKIDS has confirmed that the 4K remaster of Angel's Egg (Tenshi no Tamago), the iconic work by Mamoru Oshii and Yoshitaka Amano released in 1985, will hit theaters in North America on November 19. The company has also released a new trailer to anticipate this reunion with one of the most mysterious and symbolic titles in anime.
Premiere
at the New York Film Festival
The film
will have its premiere in New York in the Revivals category of
the 63rd New York Film Festival, which will be held from September
26 to October 13. This screening will be part of the international tour of
the restaurant, which began with its world premiere on May 20 in
the Cinéma de la Plage section of the Cannes Film
Festival.
International screenings
The Sitges
International Fantastic Film Festival will also screen the 4K version
between October 9 and 19. This restoration was carried out from a
new scan of the original negative in 35mm, guaranteeing an image quality
faithful to the original work.
Production
and legacy details
Directed
by Mamoru Oshii at Studio DEEN, Angel's
Egg was born from a story conceived by Oshii and legendary
illustrator Yoshitaka Amano, who was also in charge of art
direction. The script was written by Oshii, while the music was written
by Yoshihiro Kanno. The work is distinguished by its minimalist
atmosphere, scarce dialogues and powerful visual symbolism, becoming a
benchmark of experimental anime.
Streaming
and editing availability
In addition
to its theatrical run, GKIDS plans to release the film in a
home format and HBO Max will add it to its catalog
starting September 1. This is a significant moment, since before
2023 the work had practically not had official distribution in the West in its
original form.
