Man – The Movie: Reze Arc made a strong debut at the Japanese box office, reaching the top
spot in its opening weekend. The film grossed 1.251 billion yen (approx.
$8.45 million) with the sale of more than 807,000 tickets, according to
distributor TOHO.
A debut
that dethrones Kimetsu no Yaiba
With these
figures, the film surpassed Kimetsu no Yaiba: Infinite Castle – Akaza
Sairai, which had been at the top of the Japanese ranking for nine
consecutive weeks. Ufotable's feature film was relegated to second place, after
selling 390,000 tickets for a total of 645 million yen over the same weekend.
A
high-caliber start
On opening
Friday, Chainsaw Man – Reze Arc had already made a strong
start with more than 272,000 tickets sold and 420 million yen in takings. The
film is being screened in 421 theaters across Japan, with
special midnight screenings in cities including Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka,
and Hokkaido. In addition, it has premium formats such as MX4D, 4DX and Dolby
Cinema.
Global
expectations
TOHO
estimates that the film could fetch as much as 5 billion yen (about
$34 million) in its run in Japanese theaters. Internationally, Sony
Pictures Entertainment will handle global distribution: the U.S.
release was brought forward to October 24, while in the U.K. it will arrive on
Oct. 29. In more than 80 countries, the launch is scheduled for September 24.
