A recent
interview published in a special booklet of Dragon Ball DAIMA revealed
the level of involvement that Akira Toriyama had in the
development of the new anime. Directors Aya Komaki and Yoshitaka
Yashima stressed that the legendary creator not only delivered a
synopsis, but wrote the entire dialogues "down to the
last detail."
Komaki
explained that in the scripts there were even musical notes for
Neva's singing lines or expressions such as Majin Duu's greeting
("Ncha!"), both devised directly by Toriyama. The director added that
elements such as the inclusion of a convenience store in the Great
Demon Realm gave the setting a familiar and fun air: "That's very
Toriyama-sensei."
The
classic essence of Dragon Ball
Yashima
commented that the entire production team carried childhood memories
with Dragon Ball, but that during the development of the series they sought
to unify that identity by faithfully following the script written by Toriyama.
According to the director, it was that direct guide that allowed the feeling
of the classic anime of the franchise to be recovered.
While
Toriyama did not personally draft each episode in its final version, Komaki's
words confirm that Dragon Ball DAIMA has been the project in
which the author was most involved in the history of the franchise. This
participation is considered key to the nostalgic charm that fans have
highlighted since its premiere.
