The master of dazzling visual landscapes does not rest. Crunchyroll India published a video message from director Makoto Shinkai on Saturday to commemorate the release of eight of his films on the platform for the region. In the midst of the celebration, the filmmaker released the news that everyone was waiting for: he confirmed that he is currently working on a "new work".
In the video, Shinkai explicitly stated that he is in the process of being created. Although the video's subtitles referred to the project as a "new film," the director used the broader Japanese phrase "new work." Shinkai added that he hopes to visit India again once the work is completed and released, recalling his previous visit for the premiere of Suzume in April 2023.
Previous clues
This confirmation aligns with a post the director made on his X account (formerly Twitter) on November 12, where he mentioned that he was working on a "new movie" with "trusted colleagues," although at the time he clarified that he could not yet make a formal announcement.
Suzume's legacy
Shinkai's latest work, Suzume (Suzume no Tojimari), was a massive success, debuting at No. 1 in Japan in November 2022 and grossing over $220 million globally. With this track record, the expectations for his next project are immense.
