If you are
one of those who have an account to play online with the Resident Evil
and Street Fighter company, you better take a look at your email. The
Japanese developer Capcom confirmed that it suffered a serious security
incident on its Capcom ID user platform, exposing the information of
almost twelve million records worldwide.
The company
detected suspicious activity on its servers last Monday, October 19, and
initiated an emergency protocol to block unauthorized access. After initial
investigations, the company discovered that a third party managed to breach the
database of its membership service, affecting a total of 11,774,247 records
globally. Among the compromised information are email addresses and system
identifiers such as the date of account creation, date of last login, amount of
deposits, and the IP address used.
Despite the
sheer volume of data exposed, the cybersecurity team managed to contain the
most serious damage. Of all the affected accounts, the intrusion managed to
alter the passwords of 196 users in an unauthorized way and access personal
data such as date of birth, gender, region and nickname in 43 specific cases.
The good news within this bitter pill is that the company has not confirmed the
leak of the original passwords chosen by users and has already proceeded to
restore the access of the compromised accounts. In addition, they clarified
that credit card information was not affected in any way.
Given the
seriousness of the matter, the firm did not sit idly by. After forming an
internal committee to assess the impact, on Wednesday, October 21, they filed a
formal complaint with the Osaka Prefectural Police and the Japan Personal
Information Protection Commission. The developer enabled dedicated customer
service channels for this incident and will begin contacting affected users
while implementing new measures to strengthen the security of its digital
infrastructure.
Capcom is one of Japan's most important
and historic video game companies, founded in 1983. Over four decades, the
company has created legendary franchises that have marked several generations
of gamers around the world, highlighting sagas such as Street Fighter, Resident
Evil, Monster Hunter, Ace Attorney and Mega Man.
