The Shingeki
no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) franchise has earned a reputation on
the internet for stretching the definition of the word "Final" to
unsuspected limits. Now, with the Japanese theatrical re-release of the
compilation film The Last Attack this month, even the lead
voice actors have decided to join in the jokes about the play's never-ending
conclusion.
"The
last, last scam"
In a recent
interview with Oricon, actress Yui Ishikawa, voice
of Mikasa Ackerman, met with her co-stars Yuki Kaji (Eren)
and Marina Inoue (Armin) to discuss this return to theaters.
With an ironic but affectionate tone, Ishikawa admitted what many fans thought:
"We jokingly
say things like, 'It's the final, final scam,' but honestly, I hope the real
end never comes. That's why I'm so excited that the re-release screening has
been decided and that people can experience it again."
Eren adds
fuel to the fire
Yuki Kaji also acknowledged anime's tendency to play with
audience expectations. "Everyone feels the same. Thank you for the 'it's
ending but it's not really ending' situation. I love it," joked the actor.
However, Kaji became serious when reflecting on the weight of the work: "It's something that Japan can be really proud of... The story focuses on divisions born of borders such as walls and the sea. And yet, it creates a sense of solidarity and empathy."
An eternal
bond
For
Ishikawa, Mikasa is more than a role; it is an inseparable
part of his career. "To me, she feels like a close friend whose life I've
watched from the closest distance, and also like a daughter I appreciate very
much," she confessed.
The Last Attack film,
produced by Studio MAPPA, combines the final episodes released
in 2023 with enhanced sequences and never-before-seen scenes,
giving fans a perfect excuse to cry again on the big screen, no matter how many
times we are told that this time is "the definitive ending".
