The production company Shochiku announced, during the presentation of its 2026-2027 catalog on January 27, the production of a film by Doko Yori mo Tooi Basho ni Iru Kimi e (To You in the Beyond). According to the official statement, the anime film is scheduled for release in the fall of 2026.

The story is described as an emotional "boy-meets-girl" tale that mixes elements of romance and mystery in an isolated setting. Although the animation staff or voice cast have not yet been revealed, the project is one of Shochiku's strong bets for the fall season.

In parallel to the announcement of the film, the franchise is expanding its reach with a manga adaptation made by Haruka Chino, which began serialization in Tonari no Young Jump magazine in August 2025.

About the story

The plot follows Kazuki Tsukigase, a high school student who carries a secret and seeks a place where no one knows him, which leads him to enroll in Sakijima High School, located on a remote island.

On this island there is a place known as the "Cove of Disappearances" (Kamikakushi). One day in early summer, Kazuki finds an unconscious girl named Nanao, 16, there. When she wakes up in the hospital, her identity is an enigma, and all she leaves behind is a mysterious murmured clue: "1974."
