Dying over
and over again in the most brutal ways imaginable finally has its commercial
reward. On Monday, April 27, Kadokawa officially
confirmed that Tappei Nagatsuki's bestselling light
novel series, Re:Zero, has surpassed a staggering 16
million copies in circulation worldwide, adding both its print and
digital editions. This massive milestone was revealed through the technical
sheet of volume 45 of the work, which is scheduled to be
released in Japan on June 25.
The
never-ending cycle of success in the industry
Since this
update focuses purely on the commercial and literary performance of the
franchise, no new voice casting or technical animation changes were announced.
However, the timing of this record is no coincidence, as the work is enjoying
immense media momentum driven by multiple fronts. Here are the pillars that
keep the flame of this dark isekai alive:
- Humble and constant origins: The story was born as
a web novel on the Shosetsuka ni Naro portal
in 2012 before jumping to the physical format, proving that a good plot
can climb to the top of the industry if it remains firm over 14 years.
- Dominance in television: The anime adaptation
continues to be one of the undisputed heavyweights of the seasons in which
it participates.
- Season 4 on air: Currently, the franchise
is airing its fourth season, made up of a total of 19 episodes divided
into two arcs. The first part, titled The Loss Arc, debuted
just last April 8, while The Recapture Arc is scheduled
to start broadcasts on August 12.
What is
the cruelest time loop in isekai about?
For those
who have lived under a rock for the past decade, the premise completely
deconstructs the genre's typical power fantasy. The story follows Subaru
Natsuki, an average high school student who, out of nowhere, is transported
to a parallel world of swords and sorcery. Unlike other hyper-broken
protagonists, Subaru does not receive godlike powers or combat abilities; in
fact, he is brutally murdered shortly after his arrival.
It is at
that moment that he discovers his unique and chilling ability: the
Return by Death. Each time Subaru loses his life, his consciousness flashes
back in time to a previous "save point," keeping intact all the
painful memories and traumas of his previous deaths. From there, the young man
must use this time loop based on trial and error, suffering countless massacres
and mental breakdowns, in a desperate attempt to change destiny and protect the
loved ones he has encountered in this new and ruthless world.
