Mahjong doesn't need to be competitive to be
the center of an adorable story. Gokigenyo, ikkyoku ikaga? (Good
Day to You, How About a Game?) It confirmed its anime adaptation on June 25,
the exact same day that its fifth compiled volume hit stores. The announcement
was accompanied by a commemorative illustration by the author herself, Tsukasa
Unohana, marking the moment when her 4-panel manga about mahjong and
friendship in an elite school makes the leap to the screen.
The direction is in the hands of Kaori,
known for her work on Stardust Telepath, which places the
expectation from the beginning towards an anime of relationships between girls
with a lot of heart and cozy atmosphere. Kazuyuki Fudeyasu, who has
experience in series such as Is the Order a Rabbit?, will be in
charge of the series composition, while Mai Otsuka, known for the
character design of The Demon Girl Next Door, is in charge of the
designs. The production is by Felix Film. There is no confirmed
release date yet.
The story follows Sae, a girl who
has a hard time fitting into her elite school for young ladies. The breaking
point comes when the refined and popular Chise discovers her
playing mahjong on her phone, and from that encounter the connection between
the two grows around the game. It's the kind of premise that fits perfectly in
the 4-koma manga universe: an everyday excuse that becomes the thread that
builds a friendship.
About Gokigenyo, Ikkyoku Ikaga?
Gokigenyo, ikkyoku ikaga? is a 4-panel manga by Tsukasa
Unohana that began publication in June 2022 in a magazine geared
towards light stories and slice-of-life. It has been collected five volumes at
the time of the announcement. The story combines the elegant atmosphere of a
private girls' school with the warmth of two girls who approach each other
through mahjong, a game that within the manga works less as a competition and
more as a pretext to get to know each other.
