The production committee behind the animated
adaptation of Seven Sleeping Beauties (known to
Japanese readers as Shichinin no Nemuri-hime) has just given the
big surprise of the week. Through the opening of an official portal, it was
confirmed that this gem of comedy and fantasy will land on Japanese television
during the year 2027. The announcement came escorted by conceptual
visual art that lets us see for the first time the design of the chaotic
princesses that will star in this new franchise.
A peculiar alliance in production
To make this story look impeccable on screen,
the reins of the project fell into the hands of a joint effort between Studio
Gokumi and AXsiZ SMASH. The director's chair is
occupied by Mankyū, who must maintain the dizzying comic rhythm
with the help of Keiichirō Ōchi in the always delicate composition of the
scripts. For its part, the unenviable task of adapting the distinctive features
of the seven protagonists for animation fell to the desk of designer Masaru
Koseki.
The fairy tale that got out of control
All this entanglement was born directly from
the pen of Fiok Lee, who began serializing the original
manga in the prestigious pages of Kodansha's Afternoon magazine
in early 2023, managing to secure its twelfth compilation volume for this month
of July. The premise puts a rather twisted twist on the classic trope: the
small kingdom of Amaryllis falls under the lethal curse of a witch that puts
all its inhabitants in an eternal lethargy. Prince Alec, from a neighboring
nation, travels there with the intention of kissing the princess and breaking
the spell, but when he infiltrates the royal apartments he runs into a severe
logistical inconvenience: there are seven sleeping princesses and none will
wake up until they receive a kiss from him.
Considering the huge load of main characters
