Getting
stuck on the last day of summer break sounds like any student's dream until
time really freezes. Ikkado Ito's acclaimed work, 8-gatsu 31-nichi no
Long Summer (The Long Summer of August 31), will make the leap
to the screen twice after it was officially confirmed that it will have both
an anime adaptation for television and a live-action series.
It will be
the prestigious Shaft studio who will be in charge of the
animated production. Known in the industry for their unmistakable visual stamp,
artistic framing, and surreal direction in historical franchises such as Monogatari
Series and Puella Magi Madoka Magica, the animation house
seems the ideal choice to capture a narrative full of temporal isolation and
psychological development.
The story
introduces us to two high school students, Suzuki Takaya and Takagi Kana, who
wake up trapped in an endless loop set on August 31. While everyone around them
forgets the day's events and restarts their lives as if nothing happened,
Suzuki and Takagi are the only ones who keep their memories after each
repetition. Convinced that the anomaly is due to his desperate desire to get a
girlfriend before the summer ends, the protagonist drags his partner into a
series of crazy attempts to break the cycle, turning an absurd premise into a
profound romantic comedy about youth and human connection.
Written and
illustrated by Ikkado Ito, the original manga began
publication in the pages of Kodansha's Morning magazine in
March 2023, remaining in constant broadcast until reaching thirteen compilation
volumes in the Japanese market. Unlike traditional stories of time jumps, the
play uses the loop of August 31 as a reflective scenario about the fear of
growing up, the unfulfilled expectations of adolescence and the sentimental
evolution of two young people who learn to know each other in depth within a
frozen day on the calendar.
