Falling in love with your childhood friend is a
classic trope that never fails, but finding out that the boy you were playing
with in the mud is now the most beautiful girl in high school takes comedy to
another level. The popular light novel Oh Boy, Was I Wrong About Her (known
in Japan by the imposing name of Tenkou-saki no Seiso Karen na Bishoujo
ga, Mukashi Danshi to Omotte Issho ni Asonda Osananajimi Datta Ken or
simply Tenbin), written by Yu Hibari and
illustrated by Shirakomiso, reached its final conclusion on July 31
with the publication of its eleventh volume.
The plot puts us in the shoes of Hayato
Kirishima, a student who transfers from the countryside to a high school in the
city. There he crosses paths with a refined, elegant and extremely popular girl
who turns out to be Haruki Nikaido, his best childhood friend. The great detail
is that, seven years ago, Hayato was convinced that Haruki was a child.
Although in front of the rest of the school she maintains an impeccable façade
of a good girl, as soon as she is alone with the protagonist she returns to
being the same rude and mocking classmate that he remembers. The story follows
how the two reconnect as they deal with feelings that begin to morph into
something deeper.
The path of this original work began
in June 2020 through the Shousetsuka ni Narou portal, making
the leap to the physical format under the Sneaker Bunko label of the Kadokawa
publishing house at the beginning of 2021. The franchise inspired
a manga adaptation that successfully culminated with seven volumes in July
2025, but its greatest peak of exposure is being experienced right now thanks
to its animated adaptation. The anime, produced by the Project
No. 9 studio, began its broadcast on July 6 and remains one of the
most tender romantic comedies of the season for the community.
