Receiving bad news about the health of our
favorite authors is always a bitter pill to swallow. On August 6, mangaka Ryuta
Amazume, world-famous for being the mastermind behind the Nana to
Kaoru franchise, publicly revealed that he has been diagnosed with
cancer. Faced with this difficult situation, the author confirmed that he will
put his commercial career on hold indefinitely to undergo the necessary
treatment and focus one hundred percent on his complete recovery.
It is evident that Amazume had already been
preparing the ground for this forced pause, closing several of its recent
projects consecutively within the manga industry. Just last July
27, he concluded the publication of his work Sefure in the
Young King magazine of the Shonengahosha publishing house,
whose final compilation volume will go on sale in September. Previously, in
April of this year, he finished the story of Omae no Kao wo
Tashikametai for the Kodansha digital portal, and in
March 2025 he had already closed his other manga entitled Jofu with
the publisher Hakusensha
The indelible legacy of a cult work
Despite this hard bump in his personal life,
the legacy of his masterpiece remains completely intact. Nana to Kaoru was
a true phenomenon that ran uninterruptedly from 2008 until its end in 2016,
inspiring a successful animated adaptation (OVA), a couple of live-action
films, and several spin-off mangas such as Black Label and Kokosei
no SM Gokko. For now, the only thing that really matters is that the
creator wins this medical battle so that he can pick up the pencils again with
force in the future.
