If you thought classic tales were only good for kids to sleep, get ready for a pretty dark and fun twist. To the enormous joy of the mystery-loving community, it has just been officially confirmed that the successful novel Once Upon a Crime (known in Japan as Akazukin, Tabi no Tochu from Shitai to Deau) will have its own animated adaptation for television. Through a new official website, the production committee gave us the first promotional trailer and confirmed that the series will hit our screens in 2027.

The premise of this story is a real gem. Instead of being your typical damsel of the forest, Little Red Riding Hood becomes a ruthless, sharp-minded detective who, after being forced to go on a journey, ends up stumbling upon murders and mysteries everywhere. Armed with her tremendous natural curiosity and accompanied by Pinocchio as her bumbling assistant, this cunning waifu sets out to disarm the plans of the fairytale world's most infamous criminals, humiliating them by asking them directly why their tricks are so sloppy.

A proven success that finally arrives in anime

The work written by Aito Aoyagi is no stranger within the Japanese anime and entertainment industry. After its publication in 2020 by Futabasha, the franchise inspired a manga and also a successful live-action film released in 2023. The creator himself celebrated the news by assuring that he is looking forward to fans around the world enjoying these unique traps crafted by fantasy villains. The project will be in the capable hands of the Benten Film studio, under the direction and scripts of veteran Itsuro Kawasaki, while Manami Minakata and Yuko Yahiro will be in charge of character design.

Voice cast

  • Yume Miyamoto as Little Red Riding Hood
  • Akira Sekine as Pinocchio

Knowing that classic tales of literature always have a sinister undertone that rarely adapts so directly to the screen
