The world
of Hideo Kojima still has a lot of disturbing stories to tell, and it looks
like the next one will arrive in anime form. Kojima Productions released a new
trailer for Death Stranding Isolations, accompanied by a promotional
image and more details about the story and production team. The series, which
will use traditional 2D animation, is scheduled to premiere on Disney+
during 2027.
The trailer
was presented during an event for the tenth anniversary of Kojima Productions
in Japan, and this time the spotlight is taken by a young woman who has decided
to turn her back on the rest of humanity. And if surviving in the world of Death
Stranding was already complicated enough, it seems that reconnecting people
has not solved all their problems either.
A story
where loneliness will be the protagonist
The new
synopsis begins with a rather disturbing sentence: "My mom became a
crater." The young woman who utters these words lost her mother during the
phenomenon known as Death Stranding, when contact between the living and the
dead caused a series of catastrophic explosions. Since then, she has lived
completely isolated, until she became so accustomed to loneliness that she no
longer wants to interact with anyone.
The events
will unfold after Sam Bridges reconnected North America through the
Chiral Network. However, the story will not directly follow the protagonist of
the video games, but other survivors who have decided to take different paths.
Among them are an old man trying to connect people through unconventional
methods, a soldier caught in an endless cycle of violence, and a boy full of
resentment towards his own existence.
Of course,
the young protagonist will not be able to stay away from the world forever
either. A series of unexpected encounters will end up taking her out of her
isolation, forcing her to know a reality that for a long time she had preferred
to ignore. The production will tell a story independent of video games,
although it will retain the same universe and its particular rules.
Attack
on Titan and Psycho-Pass veterans to work on anime
As for the
creative team, Takayuki Sano will be in charge of directing at E&H
production studios, known for works such as Ninja Kamui and Bullet/Bullet.
Sano also served as an animation director for episodes of Attack on Titan:
The Final Season, while Hideo Kojima will serve as executive producer.
On the
other hand, Tow Ubukata will write the scripts and will be in charge of
the composition of the series. The writer is known for his Mardock Scramble
novels, as well as having worked on productions such as Ghost in the Shell:
Arise, Fafner, and Psycho-Pass 2. The original character
designs will be in charge of Ilya Kuvshinov, who previously participated in
Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, with Sayaka Koiso in charge of adapting them
for animation.
About his
participation, Sano explained that he assumed the project with a strong sense
of responsibility, as he considers that Kojima's works have a special ability
to connect emotionally with those who enjoy them. The director also noted that
he wanted to achieve something similar with this adaptation, which will be made
using hand-drawn 2D animation.
It should
be remembered that this will not be the only adaptation of the franchise.
Kojima Productions also has Death Stranding Mosquito in development, an
animated film with a standalone story, as well as a live-action feature film.
For now, Death Stranding Isolations continues without an exact release
date and its voice cast has not been revealed either.
