The animated adaptation of Diana Wynne Jones' novel, Earwig and the Witch (Aya to Majo), directed by Goro Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli, will have an English-language premiere by GKIDS and will be considered for the Academy Awards (Oscars) next year. The 82-minute feature film is scheduled for release through NHK in Japan on December 30, 2020, while its U.S. premiere will be in early 2021.

Synopsis of Aya to Majo

Not all orphans love living at St. Morwald Orphanage, but Earwig does. She gets everything she wants, when she wants it, and it has been that way ever since she came to the orphanage as an abandoned baby. But all this changes when Bella Yaga and Mandrake arrive at St. Morwald disguised as foster parents. Earwig is taken to their home filled with mysterious rooms, potions and books of sorcery.

Most children would have fled in terror from such a house... but this is again not the case with Earwig who, using his own intelligence and with the help of a talking cat, decides to show the witch who is in charge.
