Film distributor TOHO updated the cumulative box office earnings for the Studio Ghibli-produced film directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Chihiro's Journey), to a total of 31.68 billion yen (approximately $304.5 million), adding 880 million yen (about $8.5 million) for profits made during the film's screening in cinemas between June and August this year in Japan.

The film maintains its first position as the highest grossing film of all time in Japan, now separated by 1.4 billion yen (about $13.5 million) from the second place, occupied by the film Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Ressha-hen, which recently completed nine consecutive weeks in first place in the box office.

Three other films by Hayao Miyazaki or Studio Ghibli also set their own box office records:

  • Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke) went from 19.30 billion yen ($185.9 million) to 20.18 billion yen ($194.3 million), moving from eighth to seventh place on the list.
  • Gedo Senki (Earthsea Stories) rose from 7.69 billion yen ($74.1 million) to 7.84 billion yen ($75.5 million), moving from 78th to 76th place on the list.
  • Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä (Wind Valley Nausicaä) added 730 million yen (about $7.03 million) this year, although it remains outside the Top 100 in Japan.
